Recruitment

For Gender Insight, we seek to appoint 15 Early-Stage Researchers across three different lenses (historical, clinical, societal). Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, differing by lens/project (see descriptions in job adverts). The recruitment process for Gender Insight comprises three stages.

Recruitment procedure

  1. Online expression of interest: Candidates express their interest in applying to a position in the network via the project website. Here, candidates fill in some initial demographic information and eligibility checks. Here you can also indicate if you are only interested in applying to one specific project or are also willing to be considered for other projects in the same lens (historical, clinical, or societal). Irrespective of interest in other projects within the same lens, you must select one and only one primary project to which you initially wish to apply (candidates who submit multiple applications for different projects in the network will not be considered eligible).
  2. Invitation to submit full application: If eligibility checks are met, you will subsequently be contacted by a specific host institution and asked to submit a full application via their own website/application portal (including all relevant documents for the institution). You should do this in a timely manner as indicated by the host institution.
  3. Interviews and selection: Host institutions will be responsible for inviting shortlisted candidates for online interviews with the supervisory team. There will be 1 or 2 interviews, depending upon the project, but all will involve a short research presentation by the candidate and a series of structured interview questions. Final decisions will be communicated by the host institution. The network will ensure gender and diversity balance in the final selection of doctoral candidates and suggest changes if criteria are not met. Doctoral candidates will then be appointed at the specific host institution under local employment contracts, fully compliant with all relevant national legislation (including adequate social security provisions).

Gender Insight and its affiliated organizations adhere to the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, aiming to achieve gender balance and diversity in hiring.

Applicants need to fully respect three eligibility criteria

  1. Doctoral candidate definition: All researchers recruited in the network must be Early-Stage Researchers, i.e., not already in possession of a doctoral degree, nor already involved in obtaining one at the date of the recruitment.
  2. International mobility: Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activities (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting host organization for more than 12 months in the three years preceding the recruitment date. Time spent on compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
  3. English language proficiency: Candidates must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training. Find more information about TOEFL on the website (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This certificate is helpful, but not mandatory, if you can demonstrate the above by any other means (An MSc in an English-speaking program for example).

Secondments

In Gender Insight, each recruited doctoral candidate will be seconded to at least one associated partner organization for a duration of several months. Normal practice during secondments is for the researchers to keep their contract with their primary employer (the sending organization), which also covers travel and subsistence expenses (e.g., accommodation). During their secondments, fellows receive supervision and training at the premises of the receiving organization. Secondments differ from short visits (a few days) and are mandatory. By applying, candidates agree to participate in secondments as part of their contract.

Contract, benefits and salary

Each hired doctoral candidate will be based at the premises of the host institution where they were appointed and will pursue a PhD.

  • Contract Duration: The standard duration contract is three years (although for some projects this will be extended to a fourth year given institutional requirements, as specified in the job adverts). Gender Insight is a 48-month project starting on January 1st, 2026.
  • Salary and Benefits: The Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie (MSCA) program offers an attractive salary and working conditions. The successful candidate will receive a gross salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations. Exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment [Living Allowance (3400euro/month * a correction factor to be applied per country) + Monthly mobility allowance (600 euro)]. A family allowance of €660 per month will be paid should the fellows have family, regardless of whether the family will move with the doctoral candidate or not (also subject to taxes). In this context, family is defined as persons linked to the doctoral candidate by (i) marriage, or (ii) a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognized by the national or relevant regional legislation of the country where this relationship was formalized; or (iii) dependent children who are actually being maintained by the doctoral candidate.

The final amount will not change in case of secondments to another organization. Be aware the contracts include social security coverage providing at least sickness and parental benefits, invalidity and accidents at work and occupational diseases, covering the doctoral candidate in every place of implementation of Gender Insight activities. As these will be paid by the employer and depend on country-specific regulations, the final net salary that each doctoral candidate will receive may differ. In the case of secondments to other beneficiaries or partner organizations, the social security provision will also cover the doctoral candidate during these periods.

In addition to their individual scientific projects, all doctoral candidates will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences. Six 5-day training events will be organized for the doctoral candidates (one in Amsterdam, one in Berlin, one in Copenhagen, one in Oslo, and two online). Besides progress monitoring and peer sessions, workshops on methodology, master classes, keynote lectures, and social events will take place during each of these weeks, ensuring an interactive, engaging and inspiring program for the PhD students in the Gender Insight consortium.
