The research
This research will aim:
1. To analyse available data on gender identity, gender congruence, and use of gender affirming hormonal therapy among key populations attending sexual healthcare through the Public Health Service of Amsterdam (PHSA).
2. To assess associations between gender identity/congruence and use of gender affirming hormonal therapy on the one hand, and sexual behaviour/infections on the other hand
3. To develop counselling messages on safe and enjoyable sex, according to individual needs of persons with gender identities outside the dominant group.
In this project we use routine data from the PHSA and the ENIGI cohort.
A secondment of maximum 6 months at the University Hospital Ghent gender clinic will be part of this trajectory, to gain more insights into psychosocial support and hormonal treatment for persons in care at gender expertise centers and analyse existing data on sexual activity and health from the ENIGI cohort
Your experience
Candidates should have:
- A Master’s degree in epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field.
- Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong skills in data analysis.
- Have been a co-author on at least one published scientific article, with a significant contribution in analysis and writing.
- Excellent higher education track record and scientific curiosity.
- Fluent spoken and written English skills.
In addition, the following experience would be helpful, but not essential:
- Experience with research in TGD individuals
- Knowledge of Dutch
We seek a highly motivated aspiring researcher with a strong interest in conducting research, who thrives in an interdisciplinary environment and project, and can work both independently and as part of a team.
Due to the mobility rule you must not have resided or carried out your main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before your appointment would begin. Furthermore, you must not already be in possession of a PhD.
The position
You will be appointed as fulltime PhD for 3 years with Public Health Service (GGD) Amsterdam; you will be a doctoral candidate at the Doctoral School of Amsterdam UMC.
The Public Health Service of Amsterdam provides a wide array of public health services, including prevention, testing, treatment, partner services and surveillance for sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Services are available for key populations. For a small group of marginalized transpersons with a migration background, we offer more extensive services including hormone replacement therapy. This “transclinic” is co-led by the organization Trans United (Trans United) and the Public Health Service of Amsterdam. The organization has longstanding academic record, cooperates with several academic institutions and carries out a wide variety of research in the field of public health.
