12. Social health and social gender affirmation following gender-affirming hormone therapy

The research

This research will aim:

  1. To better understand the social health of trans and gender diverse people
  2. To examine associations between gender-affirming hormone therapy, social gender affirmation, psychosocial functioning, and social health in trans people
  3. To improve care by better accounting for social health and social gender affirmation in clinical and community settings

In this project we will examine the social health (e.g., loneliness, social support, social networks) of trans and gender diverse people. Part of the research will be conducted with the AFFIRM Relationships project, a prospective cohort study tracking people prior to and up to 2 years after starting gender-affirming hormone therapy. The candidate will also work with clinicians at the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria to understand how social health and social gender affirmation are accounted for in the clinic. A secondment with the Harry Benjamin Research Center in Oslo, Norway will help to translate research findings into community impact.

Your experience

Candidates should have:

  • A Master’s degree in psychology or a related social science field
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent higher education track record and scientific curiosity
  • Fluent spoken and written English skills

 In addition, the following experience would be helpful, but not essential: 

  • Experience with research intrans and gender diverse or other marginalized populations
  • Experience with R or similar quantitative software
  • Experience conducting research related to social relationships or social health broadly
  • Knowledge of Dutch

The position

Amsterdam UMC houses the Department of Medical Psychology and the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria. You will be working in an interdisciplinary research group that has extensive experience in research on social health and trans and gender diverse populations. The research group will collaborate with other social scientists involved in the study of the societal implications of gender.
