13. Social media and gender in adolescents and young adults

Host

Amsterdam UMC

Duration

48 months

The research

This research will aim:

  1. To examine similarities/differences in social media engagement by gender identity among adolescents and young adults
  2. To investigate gender-related messages across various social media platforms
  3. To understand how social media affects experiences of gender (expression, identity, development, etc.) among adolescents and young adults

In this project we will examine how various social media convey messages about gender, particularly its biopsychosocial nature, and effects of adolescents and young adults. We will use large language models to help uncover the types of messages on various social media platforms. We will also test the effects of social media on gender (expression, identity, development, etc.) in cohorts of adolescents/young adults, and identify potential similarities/differences between those who are cis- vs. transgender. Part of the research will be conducted with the AFFIRM Relationships project, a prospective cohort study tracking people prior to and up to 2 years after starting gender-affirming hormone therapy. A secondment with the Amsterdam Public Health Service will help gain skills in analyzing social media content and constructing informational materials in a developmentally sensitive way.
