This research will aim:
In this project we will examine how various social media convey messages about gender, particularly its biopsychosocial nature, and effects of adolescents and young adults. We will use large language models to help uncover the types of messages on various social media platforms. We will also test the effects of social media on gender (expression, identity, development, etc.) in cohorts of adolescents/young adults, and identify potential similarities/differences between those who are cis- vs. transgender. Part of the research will be conducted with the AFFIRM Relationships project, a prospective cohort study tracking people prior to and up to 2 years after starting gender-affirming hormone therapy. A secondment with the Amsterdam Public Health Service will help gain skills in analyzing social media content and constructing informational materials in a developmentally sensitive way.

Amsterdam UMC houses the Department of Medical Psychology and the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria. You will be working in an interdisciplinary research group that has extensive experience in research on gender development and trans and gender diverse populations. The research group will collaborate with other social scientists involved in the study of the societal implications of gender.
