The research

This research will aim:

  1. To determine how policies regarding gender in sports have affected gendered feelings and treatment choices of trans athletes and athletes with variations in sex characteristics (VSC)
  2. How they influenced the construction of their identity
  3. How they informed their decision makingregarding hormonal treatment
  4. To develop recommendations for inclusion of trans people and those with VSC in sports

In this project we will review the scientific literature on hormone levels and gender segregation in sports. We will collect oral histories of athletes that competed during various time periods where different policies/regulations were in place. In addition, an overview will be made of books/accounts/films/documentaries of trans athletes and athletes with VSC. In a Delphi study with trans athletes/athletes with VSC, sports officials, and members of sports organizations to develop recommendations for implementation of policies. In a secondment with the KNVB, policies regarding gender in sports will be studied participants for the Delphi study will be recruited.

Your experience

Candidates should have a:

  • Master’s degree in history, health sciences, medicine or a related field
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent higher educationtrack record and scientific curiosity
  • Fluent spoken and written English skills

 In addition, the following experience would be helpful, but not essential: 

  • Experience with research in TGD individuals and/or individuals with VSC.
  • Knowledge of Dutch

The position

Amsterdam UMC houses the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria and an expert centre for care for individuals with variations of sex characteristics. You will be working in an interdisciplinary research group that has extensive experience in research on both transgender and gender diverse individuals as well as on individuals with VSC. The research group will collaborate with historians involved in the study of the history of transgender medicine.
